About

Since 2019, privacy and data protection issues have been discussed within the Nigerian business space like never before. Two factors are responsible for this awakened consciousness. First, the coming into effect of EU GDPR in 2018 and then the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) issuance in January 2019 by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). Both regulations have far-reaching consequences for Nigerian businesses especially the ones processing personal data in the regular course of their corporate and marketing activities.

The NDPR especially imposes obligations on certain demography of entities to file annual audits, designate Data Protection Officers (DPOs), engage Data Protection Compliance
Organizations (DPCOs) etc. The recurring need for businesses to comply with these obligations continues to expose the dearth of privacy professionals in Nigeria over the years on one hand while simultaneously also emphasizing the necessity for capacity building and industry engagement.

To bridge this knowledge gap, the Law Firm of Olumide Babalola LP hosts this annual assembly of privacy and data protection professionals and stakeholders to discuss issues surrounding privacy and data protection in Nigeria.
